Just when you think American geopolitics couldn’t possibly descend any further into high-stakes farce, the universe serves up a plot twist so ridiculously camp that not even the writers of Veep would have dared put it in a script.

According to explosive new reports, President Donald Trump was recently smuggled off an airfield in Ankara, Turkey, not via an armored motorcade, a stealth helicopter, or a shadowy subterranean tunnel, but in an airport catering truck.

Yes, darling. The leader of the free world was apparently ferried across the tarmac inside the very same hydraulic box used to transport lukewarm pasta and extra cans of diet soda to the waiting masses.

A Three-Act Comedy of Errors

To fully appreciate the sheer absurdity of this game of hide-and-seek, one must examine the timeline of events:

Trump flies into Turkey for a NATO summit aboard a lavish, multi-million-dollar Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar. It has been recently revealed that he is no longer allowed to fly this plane for international trips due to the major security and safety gaps. Surprise, surprise.

  • Amid rumblings about the Qatari jet's security vulnerabilities and escalating threats from Iran, the White House announces the President will depart on the classic, baby-blue legacy Air Force One, purely for "old time’s sake".

  • Cameras roll as the President dramatically ascends the stairs of the classic 747, waving goodbye to the press, but once inside, the Secret Service positions an airport catering truck against the aircraft's off-side door. The container elevates, the President steps inside, and he is driven across the tarmac to a much smaller C-32A military transport plane.

  • Meanwhile, the press corps and unsuspecting White House staff were left sitting aboard the decoy Air Force One, instructed to keep their window shades firmly pulled down for the duration of the flight.

There is a brilliant, tragic irony to the image of an administration that preens on alpha-male swagger resorting to a scissor-lift food cart to play hide-and-seek on an international runway.

Imagine being a White House correspondent sitting on a multi-million-dollar jumbo jet, blissfully believing you're traveling with the President, only to find out you were essentially flying on a $200-million decoy plane with the blinds shut so you wouldn't catch the boss sneaking into a sandwich delivery van.

Forget Air Force One’s iconic blue-and-gold livery, the new standard in executive transport is apparently a boxy white Mercedes box truck smelling faintly of reheated chicken cacciatore.

While nation-states play five-dimensional chess, it appears the current strategy in Washington is closer to three-card monte, except played with Boeing jets and airline catering carts.

Stay tuned, readers. Next week, we might just find out the nuclear football is being carried in a insulated pizza delivery bag.
