George Santos Banned for Life from Kalshi

Disgraced former Congressman George Santos has achieved another dubious political first: becoming the first person ever permanently banned from the CFTC-regulated prediction platform Kalshi.
Following an internal investigation by Kalshi’s Compliance Department, complemented by a civil probe by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the prediction market officially issued a lifetime ban against Santos and hit him with a $71,356 penalty.
The cause? A blatant market manipulation scheme centered on whether Santos would attend the President’s State of the Union address.
How the Scheme Unfolded
The trades took place over a market contract asking a straightforward question: "Will George Santos attend the State of the Union?"
Because Santos had direct control over his own physical whereabouts, platform rules strictly prohibited him from trading on market contracts concerning his personal attendance. Despite those explicit rules, regulatory findings detail a two-phase pump-and-dump strategy:
The "Yes" Trade: In early February, Santos bought up large "YES" positions betting that he would attend. He then began posting publicly on social media about the event—even teasing details about the outfit he intended to wear. As his comments drove odds up on the platform, Santos exited his position, locking in a $3,448 profit.
The "No" Trade: Santos then quietly flipped his position, buying heavily into "NO" contracts. On the eve of the address, the market placed his odds of attending at around 75%. Minutes into the speech, Santos posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he was "waylaid at the airport" and could not make it. The "NO" contract instantly spiked to 100%, allowing him to cash out with an additional $14,391 profit.
In total, Santos turned an illegal $17,839 profit across the two trades before platform monitors flagged the suspicious activity.

The Penalties & Regulatory Pushback
Kalshi’s enforcement action marks a pivotal moment for prediction markets as they fight off scrutiny over market integrity and legal status in the U.S.
When asked about the situation on his podcast earlier this year, Santos brushed off public outrage over the trade, stating, "I guess people lost money. Some people made unexpected money. That's to show you how fragile these markets are."
Upon receiving news of the lifetime ban, Santos took to X on Monday, posting: "Hey @Kalshi thanks for the lifetime ban from your gambling platform. Let's see how much longer you guys are around for."
Broader Implications for Prediction Markets
This high-profile disciplinary action comes as platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket face rising pressure from regulators and state officials. As retail day traders shift attention toward event contracts, regulators are keenly watching for insider trading, market manipulation, and conflict-of-interest abuses.
By issuing a decisive lifetime ban to a famous political figure, Kalshi aims to send a clear message: prediction markets must maintain institutional-grade compliance standards if they want to survive.
